Students Stress Importance of Voting
As Election Day nears, San Diego Unified students provided a visual voting reminder this week encouraging people to cast their ballot on or before Tuesday, Nov. 5.
The non-partisan event was organized by students affiliated with Cesar Chavez Service Clubs and TOLA Organizing and Leadership Academy.
Approximately 30 students wore shirts and held signs along Normal Street in front of the Eugene Brucker Education Center in what they referred to as a “human billboard.”
“Voting is the first step to making a difference,” said San Diego High School freshman Samual Pardo Improta. “Unfortunately, the younger demographic rarely votes. That’s a problem because we have a lot to say, a lot of ideas, and a lot of solutions. But that doesn’t get through if the younger demographic doesn’t vote.”
Maya Cota, a 2018 Mission Bay High School graduate, said the upcoming election is about much more than just what’s going on at the national level. She stressed the importance of also researching local candidates and measures, and then weighing in at the ballot box.
“If you’re not a part of the conversation, then you’re just going to be impacted by the results of things you’re not participating in,” said Cota.
The students are planning more voter outreach events over the final week leading up to the general election.
